Become a Referee in Illinois

Illinois Sports Referee

To become a referee in Illinois, you must first register online with the Illinois High School Association. The IHSA licenses referees and umpires in the following sports:
basketball, soccer, gymnastics, football, hockey, water polo, track, lacrosse, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, softball, cheer and dance. The minimum age is 17-years-old.

After you register with the IHSA, you will receive a rules book to help you prepare for the officiating exam. The test is open book.

Once you become licensed in to officiate in Illinois, there are a couple of things you must do during your first year as an official. First you must watch an online rules presentation to get up-to-date on the latest rules interpretations and rule changes. Plan to view this presentation each year for rule changes and current points of emphasis. You will also be expected to attend a clinic to learn the correct officiating techniques and mechanics.

Illinois Referee and Umpire Training

Illinois referee training can begin as early as age fifteen! 15- and 16-year-olds that pass the training program are considered provisionally licensed officials. They are able to work local youth leagues, junior high games and 9th grade games. Illinois referees can be fully licensed by age 17 to work any level of IHSA contests.

Licensed referees and umpires are also required to pass an online rules exam before each season for the sports that they officiate. A passing grade of 80% is required.

Refer to the IHSA Handbook for more complete information about becoming an Illinois sports official.
