To become an official you should register with the MSHSAA. Here is a link to the registration page. As of this writing, the cost to apply is $65 for the first sport, $30 for the second sport and $25 for each sport thereafter. Officials must register each year with MSHSAA.

After you register, you will be sent study information to prepare for the officiating exam. The exam is open book. If you receive a grade of 75%, you will be sent a license to officiate high school sports in Missouri. If you fail to receive a passing grade, you may retake the exam two more times before you must wait another year to reapply.

Missouri Referee and Umpire Training

The MHSAA certifies officials for the following sports: football, basketball, soccer, swimming, water polo, track, wrestling, volleyball, softball, field hockey and baseball.

MHSAA training is provided by the RefReps Officiating Education System. RefReps offers detailed training videos for whatever sport you choose. MHSAA will credit you the cost of the initial training course against your registration dues.

Annual attendance to a rules interpretation meeting is also required of all Missouri referees. In addition, during your first three years, you should plan to attend a yearly mechanics clinic to refresh your knowledge of signals and positioning. Finally, all officials are expected to take a “Part II Sports Rules Exam” to help them stay up to date on the rules of their sport.
