Become a Referee in New Mexico

Become a referee or umpire in New Mexico by first contacting the New Mexico Activities Association. The NMAA oversees certification of officials for the following high school sports: baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, wrestling and volleyball.

After contacting the NMAA you will be sent a packet of information with more detail about becoming a sports official. This information will also refer you to a local group leader. This group leader oversees local meetings which help in the training of new officials.

Register with your Local NMAA Officials Association

You will then be required to register with local officiating association for the sport of your choosing. After you pay your initial dues, you will be sent the information to further your training and certification. This includes rule books, sample tests, constitution and bylaws.

In order to get your referee certification card you must pass a written test prepared by the National Association of State High School Associations (NFHS).
