Become a Referee in Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League oversees high school sports within the state. These sports include basketball, football, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, softball, ice hockey, field hockey, gymnastics, swimming, track, volleyball and wrestling.

To begin as a referee or umpire for one of these sports, register using the RIIL page of the Arbitersports website. As of this writing, registration for all sports opens July 18th and closes April 30th of the following year.




RI Referee and Umpire Registration

All RI referees and umpires must register yearly using this website. Use this link, https://www.riil.org/page/3828 to begin the registration process. The current fee is $12 per sport, plus the cost of the current rule book.

RI sports officials are required to background check by the Bureau of Criminal Identification. Registered officials must also become a member of the NFHS Officials Association. All game assignments are handled by the central office of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
