To become a referee in Delaware, begin by contacting your local referee or umpire association. Under the direction of the DIAA, associations train Delaware officials in the sports of basketball, baseball, soccer, football, volleyball, wrestling, field hockey, lacrosse, swimming and track & field.
To become certified to referee you will need to follow the training program offered. This program will consist of rules presentation as well as training on the court or field of your sport. During the training, experienced referees and umpires will help you learn what you need to know to officiate your sport.
Upon completion of your training program, you must pass a written test provided by the NFHS. This test will show that you have a thorough understanding of the rules.

For some sports, a single association covers the entire state. So there may be travel involved in becoming trained and certified. Other sports have two boards or even three boards, which is the case for Delaware basketball referees. This makes the training process somewhat more localized.
