Become a Referee in Wyoming

To become a sports official in Wyoming, begin by registering with the Wyoming High School Activities Association. In cooperation with the Wyoming Sports Officials Association, the WHSAA oversees sports officials in the sports of basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling and volleyball.

There are three classification of Wyoming referees and umpires: non-varsity, registered and certified. Non-varsity officials must pay dues and either attend a WHSAA rules clinic or view a copy on video.

To be a registered official you must do three things: pay your dues, pass the NFHS rules exam (open book) exam and attend a WHSAA rules clinic. Registered officials may work games at the varsity level.

Certified Wyoming Sports Officials

Certified officials must first spend two years as a registered official. Thereafter, they must do the following in order to be considered certified: receive a favorable grade from the observation committee, attend a mechanics camp within 12 months of applying for certification, receive a passing grade on the NFHS exam (closed book).

Certified referees and umpires may work post season tournament games. To remain certified, officials must continue to pass the closed book NFHS exam and attend a mechanics camp every five years.

In cooperation with the WSOA, local officials associations are created to assist new members with training and with getting game assignments. You will be encouraged to join a local association in order to advance as a high school referee.

Registration can be done at the WHSAA website of ArbiterSports.
